A South Indian pre wedding photoshoot is all about tradition done gracefully. Think handwoven silk, gold temple jewellery, jasmine in the hair and simple, beautiful settings. The mood is usually warm and elegant rather than loud or flashy.
Silk is the star here. The Kanchipuram silk saree, for example, is a favourite bridal saree for many women across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, as noted by the Kancheepuram district administration. It is also a registered Geographical Indication. Other lovely options include Mysore silk, Pochampally ikat, Gadwal, Uppada and Kerala’s off-white and gold cotton sarees.
These five things make your photos look truly South Indian:
This is the classic look, and it never fails. The bride wears a silk saree. The groom wears a veshti (a white or cream dhoti with a gold border) and an angavastram (a cloth draped over the shoulder). Small tip: match the colour of his angavastram border to her saree border. It makes you look like a perfect pair in every photo.
Inspired by Kerala’s kasavu style, this look pairs an off-white saree with a gold border and a matching mundu (a wrap-style dhoti) for the groom. It looks calm, fresh and timeless, and it glows in golden hour light.
The half saree (also called pavadai davani or langa voni) is young and playful. It’s perfect for fun, candid shots where you’re walking, laughing and moving around.
Not every groom is comfortable in a veshti for hours, and that’s okay. A silk kurta with a veshti or churidar still looks traditional and is much easier to move in.

Temple jewellery instantly makes a photo look South Indian. But you don’t need your full wedding set. Three or four statement pieces are enough, and you’ll feel much more comfortable.
The best props feel like a part of your life. Stick to two or three per setup so the photo doesn’t look crowded.
1. Heritage Courtyard: Walk through a pillared corridor in your best silk. Simple, royal and beautiful.
2. Filter Coffee Morning: A verandah, two steel tumblers and cotton outfits. Perfect if you feel shy in front of the camera.
3. Kolam at Sunrise: The bride draws a kolam while the groom holds the bowl of rice flour. Soft, sweet and full of details.
